The Power of Volunteering: How organisations can grow and expand their volunteer network

The House of Sport Monthly Themed Briefing Series offers a valuable opportunity to hear from a wide variety of speakers sharing insight and knowledge from their area of expertise.  At this month’s session we will be focussing on the Power of Volunteering and how this can be utilised within organisations.  We are very pleased to welcome Jas Hothi from London Youth and Nick Pearson, CEO of Parkrun to Level 5 to hear all about their work with volunteers.

When | Wednesday 15 May

Time |   11:00-12:00

Where | Level 5, House of Sport, 190 Great Dover Street, London SE1 4YB

Jas Hothi, London Youth: Female volunteering in sports youth action projects within youth organisations.

‘ActiveLeads is a new social action programme bringing together London Youth’s expertise in sports development and youth social action. Over three years we will engage 18 member organisations and 450 young people in 18 girls-led, sports-focused, social action projects.

Our aim is to show how opportunities developed through community youth organisations, designed by young women themselves, are a replicable and scalable way to engage a more diverse range of young people in regular sports volunteering.’

Nick Pearson (CEO), parkrun

‘Throughout 2017 we saw a weekly average of around 12,000 volunteers supporting our 5k and junior events in the UK. An amazing number, and one area of parkrun where we have significantly changed our approach since the early days. Originally, when we saw volunteering as a necessity in order to put on runs for other people, our aim was to reduce the number of volunteers to the smallest amount possible. Now, with our new-found understanding, it is quite the opposite.

The parkrun model makes volunteering easy and accessible and anybody can come along to help out. Volunteers are vital in any approach to community engagement and parkrun continue to see their volunteer network grow.’
